Movie : Cold Sweat Review

Assalamualaikum ♥
Just watched an Iranian movie about a female football captain who cannot compete in international tournament just because her husband forbid her from leaving the country. Yeah. Apparently in Iran, it is completely legal. Women need to seek their husband permission before leaving the country, it he said no then she will be stuck.

The movie call Cold Sweat (Araghe Sard) - about Afrooz, a football team captain. After yeas of hard work, Iran finally get to be in the Asian Nations Cup and were about to compete in Malaysia. But as they were leaving the country, she learns that his husband forbid her from leaving, as it is his legal right in Iran. In Afrooz’s case, her bitter, about-to-be-former husband, Yaser has taken revenge on his wife’s career by doing the only thing in his power to keep her around.

Things got really messy from there. Desperate to compete, she tries everything - she try to make peace with her husband, she try seeking help from the federal, she try bring her case to court and she even have an online campaign with hashtag IamAfrooz. But as  Afrooz try to maneuver Iran’s draconian legal system, where at best she can hope to obtain a divorce that will set her free, Cold Sweat ultimately shows that what bothers Yaser most is his wife’s emancipation — the fact that, instead of sitting at home and making dinner every night, Afrooz chose to pursue a career and a passion, and did so in a competitive sport that’s often reserved for men.

It is not an easy fight. In the end, you can see how Afrooz is fighting a losing battle. From a powerhouse to a powerless woman - she doesn't even have control over her own movements on the other. Sad. She turn to be powerless, frustrated and yet she still a legal wife to his jerk husband as she learn that in reality, all her success and prowess becomes impotence and helplessness in the face of laws that do not treat men and women equally.  Life is unfair right?

And I found that this movie is based on a true story. Well maybe not 100% but still it is based on a true story (so that what they told me). This story was inspired by the real-life case of Niloufar Ardalan, football star midfielder with one of Iran’s top football teams, who couldn’t attend an important tournament in Malaysia when her husband refused to sign the form she needed to renew her passport. But her ending was different, she manage to attend the tournament if I'm not mistaken. As for Afrooz, she not only could not attend the game but she also been kick out from her football team. Sad. Life is really unfair!

Bottom line is this is a good movie. Worth to watch.
